The film Kids was released in 1995. I was 16 years old.
I can remember being distinctly disgusted by the film, so much so I vowed to never watch it again.
You see, my 16 year old self was personally offended that people viewed this as a representation of MY generation. I kept thinking "I'm not like that, my friends aren't like that, who the hell behaves that way!? Maybe it was a New York City thing?" Either way, that was not the world I was living in and did not want to be grouped with "those" kids. Now keep in mind, this is coming from a girl who grew up in North Philadelphia, so I'm a city kid myself. I just felt like the film was an gross exaggeration of what kids were doing.
Now I understand from an artistic point of view the film was meant to be blunt and probably cause controversy, but at 16 I wasn't hearing it. I wanted to make sure everyone knew there were "good' kids still left in the world. Actually when I think about it, the film is probably a good "scared straight" PSA which should be shown to other teenagers.

I hate this movie too. It bothers me more than anyother film to date. and my husband actaully really likes it, which frankly still seems so wierd and slightly scary.
ReplyDeleteThis movie made me proud to the the nerdy square that I was in high school. Very disturbing flick, especially from the way the girls were characterized.
ReplyDelete"to the the" = "to be the" oops!
