Once Upon a time in Afghanistan

Phonograph record store in Kabul, Afganistan

I wrote a post back in September of 2008 where I called Afghanistan the worst place in the world for women (currently). I still stand by that statement but I was shocked when I came across this brilliant photo essay at the Foreign Policy by Mohammad Qayoumi titled Once Upon A Time In Afghanistan.

The photos showcase a modern upbeat country, as the photographer states, "Record stores, Mad Men furniture, and pencil skirts -- when Kabul had rock 'n' roll, not rockets."

"Biology class, Kabul University."

"Student nurses at Maternity Hospital, Kabul."

"A laboratory at the Vaccine Research Center."

"Hundreds of Afghan youngsters take active part in Scout programs."

"Textile store window display."

View the entire photo essay.
