What Should I Read Next?

The never ending question, but if you are like me you probably already have a long list of "to read". But sometimes you want recommendations or you want to find more fiction books on a subject, theme or similar writing styles. Here are a couple websites I found to help you along your way:

I could live here... yup, in this room... that is, if they had wi-fi, cause you know I needs my internet.

GoodReads Lists - I like browsing the GoodReads lists because these are user-generated (no computer algorithm) and have user comments which give you a really good idea of what the book is about. Also they have many discussion boards for different genres and usually you find recommendations there. For instance I'm a big regency novel fan and I can ask questions or get recommendations from other users. You can also view by tag, so if you are interested in young adult, science fiction, or gay themed books you can find them!

All About Romance - Okay, this is mostly for the romance novel fan (which I am). I usually use this site for their power review search. You can search by the book type (chick lit, civil war, ghost, mystery, shapeshifter, time travel, vampire, etc.) or sensuality rating (personally I only search for books with a rating of "Hot" or more). They also have very active message boards where you can solicit advice from other readers.

I like when people organize their books by color (it looks pretty), but it's not the most practical way to organize your books, ya know.

What Should I Read Next? - I found this website which makes suggestions about "what you should read next." I was not impressed but you might like it.

Literature-Map - allows you to enter an author and gives you other authors you might like. Again, I wasn't that impressed.

I'm Here. I'm Queer. What The Hell Do I Read? - This blog focuses on gay teen books, culture, politics and more! Great resource to find LGBT books.

Librarians - I would encourage you to ask your local librarian. They are really good with stuff like this, and if they don't know they will research books for you if you tell them what you like. For instance, call your library and say, "I would like recommendations for fiction books about lonely people on the internet" or "I loved the novel I Capture the Castle and want to read books just like that." Yup, they will have a nice list for you.

How do you select what to read next?

  1. Hi Camille,
I keep a reading list in my planner. I get a lot of my new reads from blogs and tweets.

I just started reading Regency Romances this Spring, mainly Georgette Heyer. My favorites are the Grand Sophy and Frederica. What are your favorites?

    Thanks!

  2. @Jennifer Oh yes I can't get enough Regency. My favorite authors are Lisa Kleypas, Loretta Chase, Cheryl Holt (but her books can be hit or miss), and Judith McNaught. I would recommend Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase, that's my favorite regency novel thus far! I am adding The Grand Sophy and Frederica to my to-read list now... but I have to say I do prefer my regency with a little spice, but a good story will trump that!
