He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)

He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss) is a pop song written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King and recorded by The Crystals under the guidance of Phil Spector in 1962. Goffin and King wrote the song after discovering that singer Little Eva was being regularly beaten by her boyfriend. When they inquired why she tolerated such treatment, Eva replied, with complete sincerity, that her boyfriend's actions were motivated by his love for her.

  4. thanks. good information. It's a very interesting song released at a time when rock was an oppressed artform. I've used it for years as part of a class I teach on pop music but did not really find out why King wrote it. I speculated there was a true story behind it but hadn't taken the time to research it. Sorry for double message - I didn't think it went through. Believe it or not this is the first time I've posted a comment on the web.
