Tokyo Vacation - 1

I'm on the observation deck of the World Trade Center in Tokyo.

I went on vacation a couple weeks ago to Tokyo Japan. It has always been a dream of mine to visit Japan. There is something about the country and culture that attracts me... I don't know how to explain. Anyway, I had a most excellent time and hopefully I can go back soon. I was only there for about 10 days and spent most of my time in Tokyo. I'll post random pictures from my trip.

Okay, I'm such a boring American (hehehehe). My first morning in Tokyo, what do I eat for breakfast? McDonald's of course. Did you know in Tokyo, McDonald's has a smoking section?

Wikipedia: One-inch punch

According to Wikipedia: The one-inch punch is a punching exercise from Chinese martial arts (kung fu) performed at a range of 0–15 cm (0–6 in). The one-inch punch was popularised by actor and martial artist Bruce Lee. It is designed to improve punching power and technique.

The one-inch punch was also featured in the film Kill Bill Vol. 2.

Man-oh-man, if I can master this... I think I might quit my job and take my dog and pony show on the road.

Book Review: The Comfort of Strangers by Ian McEwan

The Comfort of Strangers by Ian McEwan
Rating: 3/5

I feel a little conflicted about this novel. You see, the writing was pretty good, so it wasn't a hard read or anything, but the thing that bothered me is that I kept waiting for something, ANYTHING, to happen in this novel. I feel like in the end, this rather short story was a big tease.

Colin and Maria are a couple on vacation (I was never sure where exactly, Spain, Portugal, some island???), they spend their days doing, well, nothing (which is fine, they are on vacation, remember). Then one day they meet a sort of eccentric stranger who invites them to his home.

The story does a good job of building you up, just waiting for something terrible to happen, but I found this "incident" rather mundane (perhaps that says something about me), and then the "incident" was so vaguely describe, I wasn't exactly sure what happened and the real reason/motivates.

But I will say it's a quick read (perhaps completed in one long sitting) and the writing was pretty good. But the story.... zzzz

Films 2013 (Part 1)

I have an imdb account which allows me to easily manage my to-watch and did-watch films. If you don't have one, I say sign up and manage your movie watching, if you're into that sort of thing.

Here are a few films I've watched this year (doesn't mean the film was released in 2013, just that I watched it in 2013):

  1. Silver Linings Playbook - Loved it! I came into this film not knowing much about it but was oh-so pleasantly surprised. Not to mention it's based in Philly (my city). It's a film about mental illness done in an approachable way. FYI - originally a novel.

  2. 13 Assassins - Samurais band together to kill an evil lord. I really enjoyed it and especially liked the character Kiga, I would love to watch a film just about him and learn more of his background. Subtitles.

  3. The Great Happiness Space: Tale of an Osaka Love Thief - Documentary about a host clubs in Osaka, Japan. The first time I learned about "host clubs" and found them interesting. It's also terribly sad for the hosts and the ladies they entertain (the documentary made it seem like the majority of the ladies were prostitutes). Streaming on netflix as of 11/4/2013. You can also find the full film on YouTube. Here's part one:

  4. Olympus Has Fallen - The first 40 minutes triggered so many emotions for me. I felt like I was re-living 9/11 watching all the carnage these terrorist made in Washington DC. Good flick.
  5. The Croods - I took my nephews to see this and have to say I was not impressed. Animated.
  6. Oblivion - Did. Not. Like.
  7. 3-Iron - Lovely, just lovely film about a drifter and an abused housewife. A very quiet film (few words) but aaah, just lovely. Subtitles. Streaming on netflix as of 11/4/2013. The full film is on YouTube here:
  8. The Muppets - Cute! After watching I kept singing "Man or Muppet" all day.

  9. Iron Man 3 - Action! I enjoyed it but I have to say it wasn't that memorable of a film.

  10. Disconnect - This film showcases the "negative" side effects of social networks. A sleeper film I highly recommend. Oh yeah, it stars Jason Bateman and Alexander Skarsgard.
I will post more in the coming weeks.

Book Review: The Mind Readers by Lori Brighton

The Mind Readers by Lori Brighton
Rating: 1/5

Has an interesting premise, there is a group of people who can read minds. Well that's about as interesting as this books get. It's filled up teen internal turmoil and unwise decisions. Probably great for teens but for me, too much angst.

I have to admit, I always found the front tooth gap an interesting feature... it gives the face character.

I'm going to try...

and get back into blogging. I've just been so distracted lately (see: lazy and xbox) that I never find the time to post stuff. I see and think stuff but never get the energy to write up the blog post and hit the publish button. BUT! I've been posted a lot on Facebook and Twitter lately. So why not my blog? I even downloaded the blogger app so it would be easier for me to do it, but atlast, I never open the app. Anyway, I'm going to start slowly by reposting (sorry) stuff from my instagram and facebook. At least I'll be updating, right?

I will also note, that the fact that Google Reader has gone the way of the dodo bird, I've been reading less and less blogs... which also contributed to my lack of posts.

I took this picture three weeks ago (October 17th) at Target. They either left that row heading up since February or Nicholas Sparks novels and One Direction are more nuance than I originally thought.
