The Obedient Bride by Mary Balogh

This book made me wonder why I enjoy the Victorian/Regency era so much. It epitomized all the things which sucked about this era. The male dominant society (well, we still have that but not as much), the weak weepy women, the repression of emotions, sexual frustration and ignorance of women (lay back and think of England!) and the prevailing sense of duty, which shall/can forsake ones happiness.

Arabella, who considers herself fat and ugly agrees to marry Lord Geoffrey Astor sight unseen so that her family won't be poor. Even though she has an older and more beautiful sister who technically should marry first, but she takes the bullet and agrees. She takes this duty seriously but is constantly suffering from low self-esteem that she can barely speak to her husband. Eventually Arabella discovers her husband has a mistress and for some reason (her character development gave no hint she would act so empowered) she demands her husband stop seeing his mistress and declares their marriage a failure and will only continue out of duty. Lord Astor was cool with that because he's a man, and well, no woman will dictate how he should live his life... but then he realizes he has "actual" feelings for his wife...

I'm sure you can see where this is going.

In January 2006 in New York, the patient of a well-known psychiatrist draws the face of a man that has been repeatedly appearing in her dreams. In more than one occasion that man has given her advice on her private life. The woman swears she has never met the man in her life.

That portrait lies forgotten on the psychiatrist's desk for a few days until one day another patient recognizes that face and says that the man has often visited him in his dreams. He also claims he has never seen that man in his waking life.

The psychiatrist decides to send the portrait to some of his colleagues that have patients with recurrent dreams. Within a few months, four patients recognize the man as a frequent presence in their own dreams. All the patients refer to him as THIS MAN.

From January 2006 until today, at least 2000 people have claimed they have seen this man in their dreams, in many cities all over the world: Los Angeles, Berlin, Sao Paulo, Tehran, Beijing, Rome, Barcelona, Stockholm, Paris, New Dehli, Moskow etc.

At the moment there is no ascertained relation or common trait among the people that have dreamed of seeing this man. Moreover, no living man has ever been recognized as resembling the man of the portrait by the people who have seen this man in their dreams.

Interesting... I've never dreamed of this man, but if he's giving out good advice, I welcome him.

Saddest documentary trailer I've seen in a while...

This is the saddest trailer for a documentary I've watched in a while. I guess the part where they explain her TV was on for 3 years hit me the hardest for some reason... I could just imagine that happening to me. I come home from work one day, and as usual, I sit on the couch, cut the TV on and place the laptop on my lap and commence browsing the web - and suddenly I'm dead, not to be found until 3 years later.

Okay, okay, I kinda doubt that would happen. My family would probably start to investigate but that doesn't mean it's still not an irrational fear I have!

I really don't have any strong opinions about this book, as they say, it was neither here nor there. If you like thrillers or slight mysteries this might interest you. Meh. Whatever.

Hidden Treasure by V.B. Kildaire

I only read this story because I really liked The Desire for Dearborne by the author, but I found this one lacking. I was interested for about a third of the novel, until the story went kind of flat with little action or romantic movement. And the ending, geez, I felt like that was a huge cop-out. I say skip this one and read Desire. Oh yeah, this is a m/m romance.

A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby

Nick Hornby is known for his contemporary tales of, at times, lovable losers and how they deal with the world. His stories are usually filled with sadness, loneliness and humor and this book was no exception.

This is the story of four strangers who decided to kill themselves on New Year's Eve by jumping off a building (a notorious suicide site). After they all meet on the roof, this rag tag team (with nothing in common) somehow become an unwitting support group for each other.

The story is told from alternative points of view of the strangers and we learn a a bit about what brought them up on that roof and why they wanted to end their lives. Of course, not to be too crass, but after learning more about these people, half way through the book, you're like, "you know what, why don't you jump already!" I know, that's harsh but as the reader you're thinking, "good lord, it's so easy to solve your problems, just do a, b and c."

But I guess that's the thing about depression, from the outside, everyone says, "why don't you just cheer up" or "just go out more, get friends, get another boyfriend... yadda yadda yadda" but those things are SO easy to say but much harder to do, if you're the one dealing with the depression. So I hope people don't walk away from this book just thinking they were a bunch of whiny people with silly problems, but people who are depressed and sometimes it's hard to get out of that funk... especially alone.

The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett

Rating: 5/5

A charming story of the Queen of England who discovers the joy of reading, rather accidentally. She stumbles across a mobile library and immediately catches the reading bug. This bug slowly changes the Queen as her reading habits increase, which cause her staff (equerries, a new word I learned) some distress.

I could relate to the Queens' process into becoming a "reader" because there is something intimate that happens to you when you become a "dedicated reader", it expands your world. It causes you to question and investigate everything around you and of course want to read more.

A brilliant book depicting what reading can do to you.

Oh yes, one last thing, the ending was unexpected, funny and just perfect.
